Substance Misuse

Falling into unhealthy habits with drugs or alcohol is such an easy trap these days. It’s so often the case that you don’t recognise you have developed a dependency until you start finding that you have cravings and urges.

Perhaps you’ve dabbled with recreational drugs or simple lean into a drink at the end of the day. Or maybe nicotine is your preference. Once we partake too frequently, social pleasures can turn into a growing addiction that can affect your health and productivity.

It doesn’t help that access to substances has never been easier and we live in stressful times, where life can feel out of our control and unpredictable. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, Australia has seen a 25% increase in drug and alcohol addiction. This spike represents 1 in 6 Australians having a drug addiction, while 1 in 10 Australians having an alcohol addiction.

The slippery slope of addiction is often ignored until it can’t be ignored.

If you are struggling to manage the use of a certain substance, please don’t beat yourself up. There are many reasons why we find ourselves escaping with drugs or alcohol. Mostly, it is to avoid certain painful feelings or to shake off life’s stressors.

On top of it all you feel guilt, shame or believe that your substance misuse is a sign of weakness. The very fact you are reading this shows you have a desire to find a solution to these struggles, which highlights your strength and drive. You can kick any guilt or shame out the door because we all have issues we would prefer to resolve! It’s part of being human.

Unfortunately, one’s ability to control substance misuse is not straightforward, and the idea that you could one day no longer depend on the substance may seem completely impossible. However, with the right techniques and guidance, you can rid yourself of this burden.

If you don’t feel in control of your choices, there are methods to turn your life around so that it has more meaning. Using specific therapeutic approaches, you can be clear about why you engage in unhealthy practices and how you can finally kick unwelcome habits for good.
